When it comes to shed sizes, it's always better to go a little bigger than end up wishing you did. We've built everything from 30ft workshops down to 4ft storage boxes, and that range has shown us exactly what size suits each use case. For most people looking to store general garden equipment, lawnmowers, tools, bikes, the most common size we sell is 8ft x 6ft, which comfortably fits everything with room to spare.
But if you've got a bit more to store, or just want more space to move around in, here's how each size actually compares in real terms.
The most common shed sizes, and who they suit

6ft x 4ft
An affordable option for anyone who just needs a bit of storage, a couple of tools, one bike, or a lawnmower. It suits a small garden well, though it doesn't leave much room to walk around once it's full. As a rough guide, this size fits around 4 average sized lawnmowers.

8ft x 6ft
Our most popular size, and for good reason. It fits all your general garden storage, mowers, tools, bikes, with enough room left to walk in and actually find things. As a guide, it fits around 6 average sized lawnmowers. If you've got a bit more than that to store, here's a trick before you spend more on a bigger shed: use the vertical space. Shelving (which we offer) or simple screw-in hooks for bikes can free up around 15% more usable room without changing the footprint at all.

10ft x 8ft
Only 2ft bigger than the 8x6 on paper, but it feels considerably more spacious in practice. This is where sheds start to double up as workspaces, room for a bench and shelving alongside your usual storage, without it feeling cramped. As a guide, it fits around 12 average sized lawnmowers.

This size properly opens things up. It's a genuine workshop size, room for a full workbench, shelving down both sides, and storage, all at once, rather than choosing between them. Popular with anyone doing DIY, woodworking, or storing larger equipment like ride-on mowers or several bikes. As a guide, it fits around 14 average sized lawnmowers, though by this size most people are storing far more than lawnmowers.

14ft x 8ft and above
At this size you're building a proper outbuilding rather than a garden shed in the traditional sense, workshops, larger storage for growing families or businesses, or a genuine multi-purpose space. Everything is fully bespoke at this size, built to your exact layout, so if you're considering something this large, it's worth talking it through with us directly to get the design right.
How height affects your space
Size isn't just about the footprint, height matters just as much, and it's easy to overlook. Every Spartan shed has a wall height of 6ft 2in, rising to 7ft 2in at the roof ridge as standard, with extra height available as an upgrade on any size.
That extra headroom matters more than people expect. A taller shed means you can add shelving higher up the walls without ducking every time you walk in, hang tools and bikes off the floor entirely, and store taller items like ladders or long-handled tools upright rather than having to lay them down. If you're planning to use shelving or wall hooks to make the most of a smaller footprint (as in our 8x6 tip above), extra height is what makes that trick work even better, more usable wall space, top to bottom, without needing a bigger base.
If you know you'll be storing tall items, or want maximum shelving capacity without going up a whole size, the extra height upgrade is often better value than jumping to the next size shed entirely.
