Base Advice

What Base Do You Need for Your Shed?

Getting your base right makes all the difference. Here is everything you need to know before your delivery day.

The Simple Rule

Your shed base needs to be flat and level. That is it. It does not need to be concrete, it does not need to be expensive, and it does not need to be complicated.

What it does need is to be solid, even, and roughly the same size as your shed or slightly larger.

What Type of Base Works?

Several base types work well for garden sheds.

Concrete

A concrete slab is the most popular and most durable option. It provides a solid, permanent, completely level surface. Ideal for larger sheds or sheds that will store heavy items.

Paving Slabs

Paving slabs laid on a bed of sharp sand work well for most shed sizes. They are easier to lay than concrete and can be adjusted if needed. Make sure they are level and tightly laid with no rocking.

Compacted Hardcore

Compacted hardcore or gravel is a good option if you want drainage underneath your shed. It needs to be well compacted and level across the full footprint of the shed.

Existing Hard Standing

If you already have a patio, driveway, or other hard standing that is flat and level, this can work perfectly well as a shed base with no additional work needed.

What to Avoid

Soft or waterlogged ground

Uneven or sloping surfaces

Grass or soil directly beneath the shed

Loose gravel with no compaction

A base smaller than the shed footprint

Our Solution

Not Perfectly Level? We Can Help.

If your base is slightly uneven, do not worry. We offer tanalised timber bearers that sit beneath your shed and compensate for minor variations in ground level.

Tanalised bearers are pressure-treated timber that resist rot and last for years. They raise the shed slightly off the ground which also improves ventilation and helps protect the floor.

If you are unsure whether your base will be suitable, get in touch before your delivery date and we will advise you.

Common Base Questions

How big does my base need to be?

Your base should be at least the same size as the external footprint of your shed. A little larger is fine. Smaller than the shed footprint is not suitable.

Does it need to be perfectly level?

It needs to be reasonably level. Small variations can be accommodated with our tanalised bearer service. Significant slopes or uneven ground will need to be addressed before installation.

Can you advise me before delivery?

Absolutely. If you are unsure whether your base is suitable, contact us before your delivery date and we will talk you through it. We would rather sort any issues in advance than on delivery day.
